Wholesale natural gas prices will gradually increase beginning this winter, but they should stay below about $5.50 per million Btu throughout 2010. Wholesale electricity prices will follow the trends in wholesale natural gas prices.

Barring any unforeseen events, we expect Henry Hub prices for natural gas to remain in the $8.00 to $10.00 per MMBtu range over the next year. We project an average increase in North American wholesale electricity prices of 13 percent, with regional increases ranging from 4 to 21 percent.

Wholesale natural gas prices have increased by more than 40 percent since August 2007. Power prices are also increasing significantly due to accelerating natural gas and coal prices, obstacles to building new coal plants, and increasing construction costs for new generation of all types.
