The new Windows 7 operating system (OS) does offer significantly enhanced energy-saving capabilities. Many vendors offer software that enables centralized control of the power-management settings of networked computers. With earlier Windows operating systems, CPM software can save significant amounts of energy and be cost-effective for organizations with large numbers of computers, by forcing computers to enter low-power modes after a specified idle time or by ensuring that computers are shut down during non-working hours. Even with Windows 7, it appears that CPM can still help to achieve those benefits.
