Recent field testing of solar-powered outdoor light-emitting diode (LED) lighting shows that LED/photovoltaic (PV) technology could provide adequate light while reducing energy use and light pollution. However, the installations would have to be about three-quarters of a mile from the grid to be cost-effective compared to grid-connected solutions.
