Energy Myth-Busting for Small Businesses

Results from an E Source Roundtable Discussion

By dispelling some common energy myths, utilities can help their small and midsize business (SMB) customers save money and use energy more wisely. Despite clear facts to the contrary, some SMB customers continue to believe that leaving computers on 24/7 enhances their useful life, that screen savers reduce energy use and save money, or that running HVAC systems day and night is preferable to shutdowns and turn-ons as governed by a thermostat. Utilities may find themselves under fire when their customers act on these energy myths and find that their bills increase rather than decrease. This report sets the record straight about 10 of the most prevalent energy myths that we have encountered year after year involving energy use and energy-saving strategies for SMB customers.
