New types of electricity meters (including so-called smart meters) can communicate wirelessly with utilities to improve billing accuracy and reduce costs. Some people are concerned that the radio waves, also called radio frequency (RF) emissions, emitted by such meters might negatively affect their health, but these concerns don’t appear to be well founded. Advanced electricity meters emit much less energy in the form of radio waves than many other common electronic devices, and comprehensive medical research hasn’t yet found a causal link between this type of energy and any negative health impacts.
