“Energy-Use Displays Raise Awareness.” Utilities and their customers are always looking for ways to cut energy use and power demand as well as reduce bills. Some utilities that are encouraging conservation are also experimenting with alternate rate structures, such as time-of-use rates or critical peak pricing. These rate structures can change consumer behavior, but for them to be effective, consumers need accurate and timely information about their energy use and its cost. Enter the energy-use display—a class of products also known as in-home displays, energy monitors, or energy-use monitors—that gives people real-time information about their electricity use.
“Generation Y: The Next Generation of Employees.” A changing of the guard is occurring in call centers throughout the utility industry. The Baby Boomers are exiting the workforce and being replaced by members of Generation Y, loosely defined as people born after 1980. This is presenting both challenges and opportunities. Georgia Power, whose call center currently employs about 25 percent Gen-Y agents, has found several ways to address the workplace needs of this new generation.
