The Renewable Energy Revolution

Over the last several years there has been a frenzy of activity on the renewable energy front. Utilities are faced with goals for meeting renewable energy targets of 25 percent of generation by 2020, and it’s likely that they’ll have to meet even greater goals by 2050. In addition, a number of U.S. states are attempting to take advantage of the clean-energy provisions of the federal stimulus package and have introduced legislation to implement renewable energy projects. To succeed, the states will need to deploy a variety of strategies, including encouraging investment in customer-sited renewables. In this session, we’ll examine what it will really take to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and what this paradigm shift in the energy industry could potentially look like.

The last few years have seen unprecedented volatility in wholesale electricity and natural gas markets, challenging any reasonable projections. In this session, we’ll zoom out to review long-term market trends and energy business cycles. Then, we’ll zoom in for a closer view of select market forces that are emerging as the economy recovers from recession. Finally, we’ll dive deeper into the potential impacts of shale and liquefied natural gas in the new U.S. domestic fuels mix.

Retail Energy Market Roundup

Energy supply management remains a low-cost, high-return-on-investment means of reducing or at least avoiding increases in energy costs. In this session, we’ll review trends and recent developments, and we’ll provide the outlook for electricity and natural gas markets and prices in both deregulated and regulated retail markets. Quantitative and qualitative information meant to inform your energy supply management and sourcing strategies will be included. We’ll share our perspectives on energy strategies and how they are informed by corporate strategies. We’ll also facilitate an exchange of perspectives among the attendees.

Staying on Top of the Shifting Climate Landscape

Will climate legislation move forward this year in Washington, or will the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency continue down the path of regulating large greenhouse gas emitters under the Clean Air Act? In addition to shedding some light on these and other key policy issues affecting energy managers, we’ll highlight the World Resources Institute’s new draft standard for voluntary reporting of Scope 3 emissions. We’ll also provide a brief update on markets for voluntary carbon offsets and renewable energy certificates.

Smart Grid 101

Depending on who you talk to, smart grid is myriad things—new high-tech metering, a catalyst for the rapid deployment of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), and a massive investment in infrastructure development. So, what is smart grid really and why does it matter? What does smart grid mean to your bottom line? What are the implications of PEVs for your company’s reduction of emissions and overall expenses? This session will help put it all in perspective so that you have the information you need to demystify smart grid for your senior management as well as your facility operators.
